| Multi-tasking has its flipsides |

My friend called up a few days back. In an otherwise ‘catching-up’ call, she sounded preoccupied with her phone ringing constantly, taking print-outs for presentation, having sips of coffee and delegating work to her staff, all at the same time. Doesn’t it all conjure up an image of very modern dynamic working individual who is multi-tasking? It definitely does but there is more to multitasking than what meets the eye.Handling various different tasks simultaneously is multi-tasking. Though we humans have the ability to do multi-tasking but it is no way an easy thing to do. Our mind is designed to do one thing at a time, and by trying to juggle a lot of things at once, we force our mind to switch very often and this tires out our brain considerably and we feel worn out much faster. It is not uncommon to see in offices that people work on their computers, talk over phone, take their lunch and even have small little chat boxes opened up somewhere on their screens, at the same time. When we try to do so many different tasks simultaneously, we end up doing an average work i.e. the quality of our work suffers, even though quantity of work in some cases may increase.Does it mean that multi-tasking as a practice should be debunked? NO. It means we should use multi-tasking to only an extent.
